nbc 10 news starts now. >> a new jersey trooper hit by a car while responding to a crash on 295. this morning he is recovering after being air lifted to the hospital. we'll try to get the latest on his condition. chipping away, the eagles new management is cleaning house and three big players are reportedly out. grab a light jacket and you're good to go leaving the house this morning. take a look at this, beautiful as the sun comes up.
you may not need that jacket by lunch time. first alert meteorologist sheena parveen says for today it will feel like spring. it already looks like it. good morning, "nbc 10 news today." i'm lauren mayk. >> i'm vai sikahema. >> let's bring in first alert meteorologist sheena parveen. sheena, i guess we're under two weeks from spring but it does feel like spring already, right? >> come this weekend, we spring forward. we put the clocks forward an hour, we lose an hour of sleep but we gain more afternoon sunlight. yes, spring is coming along nicely. a lot of the flowers are starting to come up. you hear the birds chirping and temperatures really going to fall in place with that. 48 degrees in philadelphia. we've already warmed up 1 degree. allentown dropped 1 degree. 40 in allentown, 42 pottstown. we do have 50s on the map right there. locally we are mostly dry, a few sprinkles trying to move through parts of berks county, into upper montgomery county. a few sprinkles around philadelphia. that's it. we are seeing nice conditions
this morning as the sun is coming up here. high pressure to our south, southwest wind. that's going to give us warmer temperatures today. if you liked yesterday, today will be about ten degrees warmer and we're going to stay nice and dry through the afternoon. hears a look hour by hour as we go through the morning. by 8:00 a.m. we should be in the mid-40s, staying nice and dry. we get closer to lunch time around the mid-60s. and this afternoon we'll be topping out right around 70 degrees. it's going to be really nice day today. tomorrow and thursday, though, even warmer. we could be looking at record high temperatures. i'll show you how warm it will be and our next rain chance. that's coming up. let's get a check on the roadways this morning with jessica boyington. >> hey, everyone. good morning if you're just waking up and heading out the door or about to, pay attention. here's the schuylkill expressway around the vine street expressway. so this is a heavily traveled area. not a prot of problems at least. right now, the drive times are doing okay eastbound. speeds starting to drop into the
50s. no real problem there. >> an accident scene in the cloor, 295 southbound on route 130. we look at our camera over here. earlier we did see that accident scene just behind our graphic here before they moved the camera. you can see no problems in either direction. more updates when i come back in the next couple of minutes. >> 6:03. developing this morning, we're waiting to learn how a new jersey state trooper is doing this morning after being hit by a car late last night. he was responding to a crash on 295 in west deptford, gloucester conte when another car hit that trooper. the trooper was then air lifted to cooper hospital. this morning, we are still working to find out how he is doing. >> all throughout the night we've been monitoring the new jersey state police twitter account and also facebook pages as well as calling for updates. let's get the very latest from nbc 10's matt delucia who's been live all morning outside cooper university hospital where that trooper is this morning. matt, what can you tell us?
>> vai and lauren, i've been checking for updates throughout the morning. so far, no official word on any condition for that trooper who is still here at cooper university hospital this morning. we have seen several troopers and several state police vehicles show up and leave from the hospital here. troopers going into the lobby of the emergency room to try to find out any updates that they can. let's go ahead and show you that video again, this from skyforce 10, the scene last night on the southbound lanes near west deptford. this is 295. new jersey state police say around 8:20 last night, the trooper was responding to a two-car crash and fire. the trooper was standing in the road when another came by and hit him. the driver of that car did stay at the scene but the troopers injuries were serious. they include head injuries and officials aren't saying how serious the situation is right now but the fact that the trooper was air lifted to cooper hospital, does also show the
magnitude of this condition at this point. throughout the night, though, we have seen police cars come here throughout the evening, trying to get those updates. that area of 295 near west deptford has re-opened to traffic. of course, as we try to await any more information we'll be sure to pass that along to you. live in camden, matt delucia, nbc 10 news. a chester conte man is accused of shooting into the home of a child. the same child he's charged with sexually abusing. authorities say douglas cohen fired six bullets in his neighbor's house on sunday. cohen was out on bail after being arrested in january for abusing a girl who lived in that house. one of bullets just missed a child who was on a couch. >> and at 3:00 in the morning the defendant showed up with a .357 revolver, came up to the window and fired six rounds through it. >> it came in through the
window. i would have been dead and my daughter would have been dead. she was sitting here on my lap. >> cohen is back in jail and being held on a million dollars bail. to decision 2016. the next round of nominating contests are set for today. >> michigan and mississippi are eld hoing primaries for both parties and there is a republican primary in idaho and a gop caucus in hawaii. >> donald trump still leads the republican nomination battle with 392 delegates. ted cruz is within 90 delegates of the front-runner. marco rubio and john kasich trail the field. and here's how the democratic race stands right now. the delegate total shows hillary clinton with 1,100 delegates, just less than half of the total needed to win the nomination. bernie sanders trails clinton by a more than two-to-one margin. republican front-runner donald trump stans to gain more delegates in today's contest. >> he'll do it, though, while dealing with another controversy. according to yahoo! the daughter of a new jersey mobster is claiming trump had a long-time
relationship with her late father. the report says gaming investigators fined trump plaza in ac for going along with the mobster's request that women and african-americans be banned from gambling tables. trump is denying the friendship. gop presidential candidate marco rubio held a campaign rally in florida last night. rubio said everything in this race comes down to his home state. florida's republican primary is officially one week from today. and the race is tightening. a new monmouth university poll shows rubio eight points behind trump, among likely gop voters. >> marco rubio, he also has this. there's a major newspaper in his home state will not endorse rubio or any of the republican candidates in next week's primary. >> the paper said none of the gop hopefuls is qualified to be president. the sun sentinel previously backed former govern jeb bush. nbc 10 will be with you every step of the way for decision 2016. just download the nbc 10 app to
keep track of the candidates and the delegate count. new this morning, we are now hearing from passengers who survived a train derailment in northern california. authorities say a tree fell on the tracks knocking the commuter train off the rails and injuring 14 people. this crash threw the front train car into a creek. passengers say the crash led to a chaotic scene and mud slides made it difficult to get the injured off the train. >> one member was just under the mud slide. we were trying to dig her out while the train was hanging. it was a pretty crazy experience. >> and officials say heavy rain may be to blame for that fallen tree. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist sheena parveen. >> well, maybe a light jacket this morning but this afternoon, we'll be 10 degrees warmer than yesterday afternoon. today, though, we're looking at the 70s for a high temperature and even as we go through most
of the week with record highs, tomorrow and thursday. it's going to get warm this week over 25 degrees above normal for this time of year. we do have another rain chance moving in, not until the weekend, though. we stay dry with the warm temperatures, timing on the rain not that good. i'll show you that in a second. 42 in pottstown, philadelphia near 50 degrees. 48 in glassboro, 49 in dover, 50 in atlantic city. a much milder start to your day. right now we're looking at clear skies and this view at least, looking across the philadelphia area, sun is about to come up. for part of the area we're dealing with cloud cover. as the day goes along, temperatures rise very quickly. by lunch time, we should be in the mid-60s and by this afternoon, we'll be topping out around 70 degrees. yesterday we hit 61. today around 10 degrees warmer than yesterday. mostly dry, we have a few sprinkles trying to move into parts of upper montgomery county. maybe a few sprinkle around the
philadelphia area. otherwise we stay dry as we go through this afternoon. that warm air keeps moving in. big area of high pressure to ourself. that will keep swinging at the warm temperatures. today for highs, we're looking at the upper 60s through the lehigh valley. partly cloudy skies, 70 for chester, 70 philadelphia, 72 in wilmington. closer to the shore about the mid-60s, 72 degrees in dover, 70 in vineland. warm today, even warmer tomorrow, near record highs tomorrow and thursday. we'll take a look at that forecast in your seven-day coming up. thank you, sheena. 6:10 this tuesday morning. let's get another look at traffic. >> jessica boyington keeping an eye on that for us. just after 6:00. things will get busier out there. that's exactly what happens. >> a little bit after 6:00 we see more cars heading out the door. here's 422 around trooper road where most of that traffic and volume usually heads eastbound. you can see we are hitting the brakes when we head eastbound towards the schuylkill expressway. that drive time still doing okay. that total trip from 29 to the

>> there's already the machine that does the work of heart and lungs when a patient is so sick. it's been so successful that recently lankenau medical center invested in four portable ones. >> so good to see you. >> thank you so much for everything. >> what this means is more patients like john mckenzie of glenn mills will survive a major heart attack. 47-year-old mckenzie walked into the hospital having an attack, his body quickly shut down. he was put on the ecmo machine which removes blood from the body and oxygenates it, therefore, giving the heart and lungs a chance to rest and hopfully recover. flu and pneumonia patients are placed on ecmo when their lungs get so inflamed and filled with fluid. >> once we put them on the pump we can save their oxygen levels. the whole body can survive for a while until the lungs get better. for a lot of young, healthy
people, the lungs do eventually heal up. >> patients who were on ecmo at other hospitals besides lankenau can be safely transferred here for treatment. before these portable ecmo machines, patients would be unhooked from the life-saving machine and that got risky. reporting live in wynnewood, katy zachry, nbc 10 news. >> thanks, katy. 6:17 this morning. let's get a check on traffic. >> jessica boyington, you're looking at 95 right now? >> 95 right now. we'll start to see delays because of the accident scene approaching the walt whitman bridge. on the northbound side we do have police activity there on the scene. there is a fire engine in place, penndot crews there as well. we're taking out the right shoulder and the next two lanes over. that's 95 northbound approaching the walt whitman bridge area with a few vehicles involved in that accident. patco, amtrak, new jersey
transit and d.a.r.t. are okay. we are having equipment problems and 20 minute delays, however. new at 6:00 one airline is aiming to give star gazers a sky-high glimpse at a heavenly sight. >> alaska airlines is adjusting the schedule of one of its flights from anchorage to honolulu so their passengers can get a look at today's total solar eclipse. the sun will be completely blocked out by the moon for a little less than two minutes today. don't blink. you'll miss it. it happens over western pacific and southeast asia. let's check in now with sheena parveen. >> we don't be able to seat solar eclipse this time, is that the deal. >> it's over indonesia. passengers flying from alaska to honolulu can see it because it's in a very narrow strip there. if you're on a plane flying to
alaska from honolulu you'll pass it. good news, we'll be able to see the sun. maybe not an eclipse but it will be nice. it will come along with warm temperatures. even this morning, maybe a light jacket for you. 48 in philadelphia, 40 in allentown. 45 in millville. yesterday we hit 61. today will be around 70 degrees. warmer today than it was yesterday. the warming trend will continue for tomorrow and even as we go into thursday. we are talking about record warmth in the forecast as we go through part of this week. we go into the weekend and we'll see a rain chance in the forecast, mostly for saturday and sunday. but stepping outside this morning, looks really good. 45 in reading, 45 in millville. mount holly, 46 degrees in trenton. all these numbers continue to rise. even by lunch time, temperatures
around the mid-60s and this afternoon we top out around 70. i'm sure a lot of people will be out in shorts and t-shirts later on this afternoon. record high temperatures for the rest of the week. i'll show you how warm it will get. we'll take a look at the rain chance for the weekend. that's straight ahead. thank, sheena. universal pre-k in philadelphia is expected to get a big boost in private funding today. the william penn foundation plans to make a significant grant to the fun for quality. that fund gives money and planning is ofs to places that offer pre-k in philadelphia. today's announcement will be made the aa preschool that's already been helped by the fun for quality. mayor jim kenney will be there. he promised universal pre-k as part of his election campaign. this is what you'll be seeing on your door step or newsstands this morning. the "philadelphia daily news" cover reading "chipping away." it's a move by the current

25 past 6:00 this tuesday morning. 48 degrees in most of philadelphia. nancy reagan's funeral will be friday. the former first lady will lie in repose at the reagan presidential library in california wednesday and thursday. the funeral service will be private. flags are at half-staff outside the reagan library in simi valley and other government buildings around the nation. mrs. reagan died of heart failure sunday morning at her los angeles home. she was 94. she'll be buried next to her husband at the reagan library in california. $55 million. that's what a jury awarded sports reporter erin andrews yesterday in a lawsuit over a nude video. andrews won the judgment against both the owner of a nashville hotel an a man who secretly

busy highway, in the past 20 minutes we learned that that trooper has died. >> matt delucia is outside cooper hospital in camden. what have you learned about the trooper? >> reporter: lauren and vai, we just got new information a few minutes ago. throughout the night we've seen troopers and state police vehicles out here at cooper university hospital trying to get updates. unfortunately they got that bad news earlier. new jersey state police is telling us that the trooper was 31-year-old shawn cullen. he was on scene of a crash on 295 in west deptford last night. we have video of that scene from skyforce 10. this was just before 8:30 last night. while walking on the road near the crash, a passing car hit him. trooper cullen was air lifted with head injuries. the colonel with state police informed those waiting here at the hospital. cullen was stationed in belmar and he had been a trooper for

warmer than it was yesterday. 10 degrees warmer. this morning we are starting with mild temperatures, 48 degrees in philadelphia. look at mount pocono, even near 50 degrees right now. 42 in pottstown, 49 in dover. 50 in atlantic city. maybe a lyle jack net morning. you're not going to want it this afternoon, though. nice and dry on satellite and radar here. we really don't expect rain until about the weekend. big area of high pressure to our south. that will keep us dry. the flow around it, that's pulling in the southwest wind. it's going to keep us warmer today. as we go through the day, temperatures will be topping out around 70 this afternoon. but starting off your morning, temperatures are rising very quickly today. so by 8:00 a.m., we'll be around 50 degrees. by noon, mid-60s and by the afternoon, right around 70 degrees. let's get a check on the roadways this morning with jessica boyington. jessica? >> thanks, sheena. we're watching 95 for delays because of an accident scene approaching the walt whitman on the northbound side. we're looking at cameras around
broad street. the northbound lanes having some delay approaching that scene, southbound doing a bill better at least at this point. that accident scene is starting to clear out of the way. we do have just some shoulder blocked. for right now, most of the lanes are getting by. here's out in montgomery county an accident scene in cheltenham on ashbourne and 2 send street. dealing with 20-minute delays with septa. the west trenton line inbound to center city and the norristown high speed line inbound to 69th street transportation center. a woman and two children are injured after being hit by a tow truck. >> they were crossing a philadelphia street when they were struck. they got halfway across the street and then stopped to wait for traffic. surveillance video shows last night's accident on bee and ontario streets in kensington. the woman tried to cross the street with an infant in the stroller and 4-year-old beside her. the good samaritan describes
what happens next. >> i wassen 0 the phone to 911 but they couldn't understand me because i was screaming. i grabbed the baby and the gentleman jumped in the back with the little boy. he stayed at the hospital. >> police say the tow truck droofer had the right of way here. the 24-year-old woman and two young girls suffered head and neck injuries. they are in stable condition. a drug investigation leads to a police chase and ends in a crash in west philadelphia. four people are in the hospital in critical condition after this. police tell us it all started when they spotted a possible drug buy in darby borough, delaware couldn't i. they crashed into several cars and ran away. both men were arrested. a former main line swim coach and guidance counselor who tried to see deuce a student will have to register as a sex offender.
emily feeney worked at malvern prep in chester county until she was fired last may. yesterday a judge sentence her to five years probation after she pleaded guilty to criminal charges. fanny sent hundreds of messages and a topless selfie to the 16-year-old boy. she promised him admission to harvard university in exchange for an intimate relationship. the boy repeatedly rejected feeney's advances. mary pat and i will be going away on tuesday for a couple days to relax. i'll be back in the state after that. >> new jersey governor chris christie told us last week that him and his wife are going away for his 30th anniversary. the rail unions have thorred a strike for early sunday if no deal is reached. the strike would impact more than 100,000 riders, including many in our area who use the trenton and hamilton stations. the strike would affect the atlantic city line that goes between ac and philadelphia. christie says there is really no need for him to be around to deal with the strike talks. >> it's not the job of the governor to negotiate this personally. it is the job of the governor to
set down parameters for the negotiation which are executed by the professionals. >> new jersey transit put together a contingency plan which relies heavily on bus transportation. maria sharapova fails a doping test. nike said they were sadden and srped by the news. switch watch brand says it's dealing with the tennis star will not be renewed. sharapova said she failed a test of the australian open for a banned substance. the drug was added to the ban list on january 1st. decision 2016, another tuesday meeting and other set of nominating contests. voters in four states cast ballots in the race for the white house. michigan and mississippi are holding primaries for both parties. there's also a republican primary in idaho and gop caucus

hand. >> jessica boyington joining us with a look at traffic. what are you finding? >> we are still watching big delays on 95, lauren and vai because of an accident scene that's approaching the walt whitman bridge on the northbound side. right now we're looking at the northbound side around broad street. you can see it's a slow go approaching that scene. the southbound side at this point doing a bit better. but obviously we have lane restrictions and that vehicle accident. earlier we had the right-hand shoulder and the next two lanes blocked with only two lanes getting by. a few more lanes opened. still, we see residual lanes that remain there. here's the 42 freeway around route 41. no major problems headed northbound into the philadelphia area or 295. no problems yet. lauren? >> thanks, jessica. we continue to follow breaking news this morning. a new jersey state trooper has died after being hit by a car last night. >> here's a live look at cooper university in camden where the trooper was being treated overnight. we learned about a half hour
6:45. we're getting more information from our breaking news a new jersey state trooper died from injuries after being hit by a car along 259 in glo95 in glouc county. new jersey state police identified the trooper on their facebook pages ashawn cullen. he was 31 years ole and had been a trooper for about two years. the 22-year-old woman who hit him did stop and is cooperating with the investigation. she has not been charged. also happening today,

could become deaf if he keeps touring. ac/dc was supposed to make a stop at the wells fargo april 1st. that is canceled for now. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist sheena parveen. >> well, this morning we are waking up to nice, mild temperatures across the area. we're mostly in the 50s but by this afternoon, we will be around 70 degrees and this is the case for the next couple days. with even warmer temperatures. we're looking at record highs in forecast. next rain chance comes this weekend. we're at 40 in allentown, 45 reading, 42 pottstown. upper 40s in philadelphia. 48 degrees now. most of south jersey and delaware, mid to upper 40s. very comfortable start this morning. but by the afternoon, we'll be warmer than yesterday. beautiful lookout side across philadelphia. the sun coming up here, clouds around. we do stay dry. yesterday we got to 61. today we'll hit 70. tomorrow, mid-70s within thursday near 80 degrees. the normal high is 50 degrees.

we're about six minutes before 7:00 a.m. time now to get a check of the stories you need to know about as you start your day. >> we begin with breaking news we're following for you this morning. nbc 10's matt delucia is live at cooper hospital in camden where we have learned a new jersey state trooper has died. matt? >> reporter: lauren and vai, we've seen troopers come here to the cooper hospital e.r. throughout the night trying to get updates. unfortunately now they have learned that one of their own has died after being hit by a car last night. 31-year-old trooper shawn cullen was on the scene of a crash just before 8:30 on southbound 295 in deptford. while he was standing on the road he was hit by a passing car. trooper cullen was air lifted to
cooper with severe head ja injuries. he was pronounced dead shortly after midnight. the car who hit the trooper has not been charged with a crime. we'll be trying to get updates throughout the day in terms of any arrangements or anything with the state police to try to find out any more information. for now, live in camden, matt delucia, nbc 10 news. >> thanks, matt. a woman and two young children are recovering after being hit by a tow truck while crossing a philadelphia street. surveillance video showed last night's accident on bee and ontario streets in kensington. they stopped in the intersection and were struck by the tow truck. the truck did stop. another big day of primaries in the race for the white house today. >> michigan and mississippi are both holding primaries for both parties. there's also a republican primary in idaho and a gop caucus in hawaii.

around philadelphia. live look out center city, looking at the ben franklin bridge across the delaware river. we're on the camden side in this view, looking at philadelphia from across the delaware. beautiful conditions, look at the sky, just partly cloudy this morning. we're going to see nice conditions as we go through the day today. temperatures in the 40s right now. but as we go through the afternoon, we will be right around 70 degrees. take a look at the beautiful sky there and temperatures will be getting warmer tomorrow and thursday. we're looking at record warmth in the forecast. 76 tomorrow, 78 thursday. normally this time of year when we talk about a big warmup, it comes with rain. not this time. friday will be about 10 degrees cooler than thursday. although i wouldn't call it cool. 68 degrees is still mile. the normal high is 58 degrees for this time of the year. we're not going to be close to that in the next seven days. over the weekend, rain chances move in. 64 degrees for saturday and sun. see the clock, 2:00 a.m. sunday morning, spring forward one
